Getting started
How is this different from Shopify's built in gift cards?
Shopify creates and emails a gift card when the line item is fulfilled, which by default is the moment the order is paid. There is no way to hold it.
GiftCourier sells an ordinary product instead, and issues the real Shopify gift card itself on the delivery date. The card that lands is a genuine Shopify gift card, so it redeems and reports like any other. Shopify's own gift card products are refused, because there is no safe way to hold one back.
Do I need to use a Shopify gift card product?
No, and we recommend you do not. Use an ordinary product and add your gift tag to it. Shopify mints nothing for an ordinary product, which is what makes the delay safe.
Shopify's own gift card products are not supported, and GiftCourier refuses them rather than scheduling a gift card it cannot deliver safely.
Shopify creates and emails its own card for one of those the moment the line item is fulfilled. We cannot switch that off for a single product, and we cannot get ahead of it, because fulfilling the line ourselves would need a permission over your orders that we do not ask for. Scheduling one anyway risks two funded cards for one sale, and a gift card can be deactivated but never un-paid.
So the line is refused before anything is created, and it appears on Needs attention explaining why. Nothing is emailed by us. Your customer will normally already have Shopify's card from checkout.
Your existing Shopify gift card product can stay exactly as it is for customers who want a card immediately. To sell scheduled gift cards, add an ordinary product alongside it and tag it.
How is the sale recorded in my accounts?
A scheduled gift card is an ordinary product, so Shopify records the sale as ordinary product revenue. It will not appear in Shopify's gift card reports and will not be counted as an outstanding gift card liability there.
Most accountants treat a gift card sale as deferred revenue until it is redeemed. Check with yours how you want these recorded. We show liability totals in the app for your month end close. Redemption is unaffected, because the card we issue is a real Shopify gift card.
How far ahead can a gift card be scheduled?
Up to 365 days. You can lower that limit in the theme block settings.
Refunds and cancellations
What if the customer refunds before the delivery date?
No gift card is ever created, so there is nothing to claw back. This is the main reason the app exists.
What if they refund after the gift card has been sent?
The card is already live and spendable. We flag the gift card on Needs attention, where one click deactivates it in Shopify if that is what you want. We will not do it on our own, because the recipient may already be holding it.
What about a partial refund?
If units were returned, that many gift cards are cancelled and the rest still send. A money only refund, such as a goodwill adjustment, cancels nothing, because no unit came back.
What happens with a chargeback?
This one has a real limit, so here it is plainly. Shopify has no disputed order status, and reading disputes needs a separate permission that only works for Shopify Payments stores. An open, unresolved dispute therefore looks identical to a normal paid order to us, and the card is created.
If the dispute is already lost and Shopify has refunded the order, we refuse to create the card. If you are disputing a gift card order, cancel the pending delivery yourself from the delivery page.
The gift email
The recipient deleted the email. Can I resend it?
Yes. Open the gift and choose Resend the gift email. Same code, same address, no new card, nobody charged.
What if the address was wrong and bounced?
We mark it as not delivered on Needs attention and email it to you, so you hear it from us rather than from your customer. Get the right address from the buyer, then use "This address did not work" to send the same card there.
You get one correction per bounce. A second is refused. A gift card code is a bearer token, and an unlimited repair would let one bounce re-aim the same live code at a new inbox indefinitely. If the second address is also wrong, email us with the order number.
Does the buyer get a copy of the code?
Only when an address is genuinely undeliverable. The person who paid then gets the code with an explanation so they can pass it on. Turn this off in Gift settings if the purchaser should not see the code, which is usually the case for corporate gifting.
Who does the gift email come from?
The contents are yours. Your logo, your colours, your store name and your own subject line, and the buyer's message in their words.
The sending address is ours, not your domain. It is sent by GiftCourier from no-reply@mail.giftcourier.app, and replies go to support@giftcourier.app. That is a reputation the app keeps clean across every store on it, and it means you do not have to add DNS records to your own domain to make gift emails arrive.
Can I look up a gift card code?
Not in the app, and not by asking us. Only the last four characters are ever displayed. A code visible in the admin is a code visible to anyone with admin access, and whoever reads a gift card code can spend it.
We do hold the full code, encrypted, because Resend and the bounced-address repair have to send the same card again rather than create a second one. It is decrypted only to put back into an email, never to show on a screen or to hand to support.
What if the recipient marks it as spam?
It arrived. We show it as “Delivered, reported as spam” and take no action. Resending it would be exactly the wrong response.
A temporary bounce is not the same thing, and we do not treat it as delivered. A full mailbox, greylisting or an outage shows as “Not delivered (try again)” and appears on Needs attention, because we cannot tell you it arrived when it did not. What we will not do is re-route it: the address may be fine tomorrow, and forwarding a live gift card code on a maybe is not a trade worth making. Use Resend when you think the mailbox will take it.
Changes and timing
Can I change the date or the recipient after purchase?
Yes, while the gift card is still scheduled. Edit it on the delivery page. You can also cancel a delivery there.
I removed the tag from a product. Do pending gift cards stop?
No. Untagging applies to new orders. Gifts already paid for still send, because the product was checked when the money arrived. Cancel individual deliveries if you need them stopped.
What if the order is edited after purchase?
At send time we issue the lower of the original and current price. Never more than was paid.
Anything special about gift cards scheduled far ahead?
Shopify only lets apps read an order for 60 days. Past that we can still send the gift card, but we can no longer read the order, so we cannot forward a bounce to the buyer or re-check a refund. We tell you rather than guessing.
Your account
What happens if my plan lapses?
Gift cards already scheduled still send. Your customers are not punished for a billing gap. What pauses is what you can do in the app, such as resending, retrying and test emails.
New orders fall back to the free allowance of five gift cards a month. Past that they are held rather than sent, and we email you, exactly as described below.
What happens if I go over my plan's gift card limit?
Nothing happens to your buyer. The order goes through, they are charged, and checkout looks completely normal. We would rather hold a gift card than cost you a sale.
The gift card is held instead of sent, no gift card is created, and we email you the same day so you hear it from us. It waits on Needs attention until you either move up a plan and release it, let the allowance reset at the start of next month, or cancel the delivery and refund the order. All three are fine.
What happens if I uninstall?
Pending gift cards are cancelled and we stop. Removing the app removes our access, so we can no longer read the order or create the card. Every gift card already issued keeps working, because they are real Shopify gift cards and not vouchers that live in our system.
You are told twice. The deliveries screen warns you before you uninstall, while there is still something you can do about it, and we email you afterwards with how many were cancelled. Your buyers paid for those, so you can refund them or issue the cards yourself.
Reinstalling does not restore cancelled gift cards. Anything already sent is unaffected.
A customer asked to be forgotten. What happens to their gift card?
Shopify sends us a privacy erasure request, and we erase that buyer’s recipient address, recipient name, sender name and message. Any gift card of theirs still waiting is cancelled, and it cannot be resent. The address is gone from our records and from the order, so neither you nor we can recover it. Erasure is not something either of us can decline.
The delivery page says exactly this, rather than leaving you with an unexplained cancellation next to a blank recipient. The order is yours to settle: your customer paid and the recipient will get nothing, so refund it or arrange the gift another way. Gift cards that had already gone out are unaffected and still work.
These arrive without warning and we do not email you about them today. If a buyer tells you they have made an erasure request, check your Cancelled tab.
What data do you keep, and for how long?
Recipient address, names, message, delivery time and amount, for as long as you have the app installed. Gift card codes are encrypted at rest. Personal data is never written to our logs.
When you uninstall, Shopify sends a redaction request and we delete your store's records entirely. The privacy policy has the detail.
